#CreateANewUrbanLegend via Hashtag, You’re It!: @McMannofthePeop The Top Picks

Ok, so I’ve turned off all the lights here in the bathroom. Light a candle. Stared directly in the mirror and slow chanted “Bloody Mary…………Bloody Mary……………..Bloody Mary” and blew out the candle. With a flick of my Bic a tan glow fills the bathroom and standing right behind me is………………………………………………..nothing.

Because the whole Bloody Mary myth is what is called an Urban Legend. Most historians date the Bloody Mary legend back to the 70’s. The term urban legend itself was only coined in the mid 60’s. Urban legends are a form of modern folklore where a story teller tells the story they heard from a friend or a friend of a friend. Mostly told as a true story with elements of the story being changed for region to region. Even in the age of the internet known for their fact checking fervor, urban legends STILL get passed from one generation to the next. We’ve all heard of the Vanishing Hitchhiker, or The Slender Man, or the hook on the door handle story. These urban legends has persisted thru the ages with only small modifications to keep them current. They are a part of the american psyche as much as apple pie. Some are even taken from whispered tellings in the school yard to the forefront of the media. Take the urban legend of flashing your headlights to get a car to turn its lights on and then that car, being a gang initiation, with turn around and come attack you. A complete and utter urban legend. But it was picked up by news channels across the country and broadcast as a warning to viewers. Police departments even issued reports for people to take caution on the road because of it. There may have been incidents after the fact but the whole thing was a entire fabrication. Or the more recent urban legend of how to quickly recharge your iphone by putting it in the microwave. Many a new iphone was ruined along with ruining their microwave. Some urban legends have been with us for ages. Some have come and gone in the blink of an eye. So what will be the next urban legend to spread this country? Maybe a snapchat filter that curses the user to have dog ears for the rest of your life. Or a certain pose of a selfie that will show you how you die. Or maybe that PayPal actually swims around in your money like Scrooge McDuck.
