#FirstWordsWhenWeLandOnMars via Hashtag, You’re It!: @McMannofthePeop The Top Picks

Did you know that Neil Armstrong said his famous quote wrong? It’s true. In 1969, it was a HUGE deal that we were going to land on the moon, so the boys at NASA gave him a line to say as he descended the steps. But after a long flight and the whole pressure of the moment it got to him a little and he flubbed it. Now truthfully it is a minor flub and most people don’t even notice it. His famous line went “One Small Step For Man, One Giant Leap For Mankind”. Hey, YOU be in a space suit 238,900 miles above the Earth with the entire planet watching you and see if get everything absolutely right! Because the line should have been “One Small Step For A Man, One Giant Leap For Mankind”. It’s a small difference, most people didn’t notice, and we still got the meaning. It was a big step in the technological advancement of mankind. Recently we have turned out backs on space exploration. It does cost lots of money that could be going to other more pressing matters on this planet. But NASA isn’t gone. It’s still there. And with the proposed creation of Space Force, outer space is once again the forefront of exploration. The next planet to explore is our closest neighbor Mars. At a mere 54.6 million kilometers it’s just a quick hop skip and a jump really. But this time the importance of landing there will be greater. Hell, the moon is really just in our backyard. Mars is a whole new ballgame. So we’ve got to get our wording juuuuust right for this occasion. No letting a nervous astronaut screw this one up! But what should we say? Something about the indomitable spirit of mankind? How technology has brought us greater understanding of the universe itself? Maybe something that touches on the very soul of man? Or we just whip out a big map of the solar system and put a big red X over Mars and turn towards Jupiter and menacingly point to it. These are just a few examples. There are 7 billion people on this planet who might have ideas.
