#WhyUnicornsReallyWentExtinct via Hashtag, You’re It!: @McMannofthePeop The Top Picks

So I learned something interesting when studying up on this week’s “Hashtag, You’re It” topic. This week’s tag was #WhyUnicornsReallyWentExtinct. In an effort to make this introduction a little bit more interesting and factually accurate, I did my normal research into unicorns and found something out that even I didn’t know about them. It is believed that unicorns are really based on cows! Yup, you heard that right. Cows. So let me take you back to when the myth of unicorns first started. All the way back to antiquity. Don’t worry, I had to look up when antiquity was also. Antiquity is “the period of cultural history between the 8th century BC and the 5th or 6th century AD”. Thank you Wikipedia. Now unicorns first appeared in the Indus Valley Civilisation. Aaaaaaaaand back to Wikipedia. I quote “was a Bronze Age civilisation mainly in the northwestern regions of South Asia, extending from what today is northeast Afghanistan to Pakistan and northwest India”. Now, seals from around this time period are the first vision record that we have of unicorns. But most historians now believe that these images are NOT of unicorns but are actually of Aurochs. Aurochs were large, wild cattle from that area that are ancestors of today’s cattle. See you learn something new every day. But the modern idea of a unicorn is very much different from an ancient drawing of a cow from the side. Unicorns are seen as magical creatures running free and wild in the forests. Creatures of grace and purity that can only be subdued by a virgin. Large white horses with a long spiral horn on its head. But like most magical creatures, we really don’t see them to much now a days. Unlike the occasional sightings of Bigfoot or the Loch Ness Monster, unicorns have become absent from the mortal realm. Where did they go? What happened to them? That’s what I asked Twitter this week for #WhyUnicornsReallyWentExtinct. So check out the top list below and don’t forget to join me every Tuesday at 11 am EDT for the next magical episode of “Hashtag, You’re It”
