Cheese, noun: a food consisting of the coagulated, compressed, and usually ripened curd of milk separated from the whey. Simple definition really. Most of us know what cheese is. We hardly ever give it a thought as we place it on top of our burgers, or dunk tortilla chips into a big melted bowl of it, put it between two pieces of bread and grill it, or just slice it and eat it au naturel. But you know me and how my mind works. It got me thinking back to the first person to actually make cheese. Who was that first lazy cave man who didn’t want to clean his cave out and just left a glass of milk just sitting out long enough to actually turn into milk. And also, how hungry WAS he that he saw that old spoiled milk and still went “Ugh, Gronk hungry. Gronk have no food in cave. Gronk eat weird chucks floating on top of 2 week old milk” (hopefully you read that whole thing in a caveman voice) And if that first venture into eating non refrigerated curds didn’t kill him he liked it so much, went back and did it again, and told others of his new culinary discovery. THAT’S How we got cheese! Or at least how, in my mind< we got cheese. Historians believe that the first batches of cheese were made around 8000 BCE. Ever since that day we have enjoyed every single form of cheese. Besides farming it has been the oldest profession (besides that OTHER one). Go to a restaurant now a days and you’d be pretty hard pressed to find a dish on the menu that didn’t have cheese on it in one form or another. Old cheese, moldy cheese, head cheese, there really isn’t a kind of cheese that will make us stop eating it. But what about what you call it? What kind of name would actually stop us from eating that dairy produce that we love so much? That’s what I asked twitter this week with the hashtag #BadNamesForCheeses.
