In 1984 a movie was released that warned us exactly what will happen in the future. It was a warning. But we didn’t listen. That movie showed us exactly what will happen if we put the control of our lives into the hands of machines. Here’s a little spoiler warning…….It doesn’t go well. It ends with the almost complete destruction of mankind. The machines that we made to make our lives easier gained sentience and turned against us. They saw us as the problem that needed to be solved. The solution to that problem, nuclear annihilation. The people of this movie put too much control into those machines. They let them run every facet of day to day life, from simple tasks like running a household to the larger duties of being put in control of the military. They gladly put those machines in a position of power over them, never giving a thought about the consequences. If you haven’t guessed what movie I’m talking about yet it’s “The Terminator”. Directed by James Cameron and starring Linda Hamilton and Arnold Schwarzenegger. It’s a tale of machines bitch slapping the humans who made them. We’ve had 36 years to heed it’s dire warning of not letting machines take too much control of our lives. The future that the movie speaks of isn’t too far away. In the original movie, the terminator is sent back from the year 2029. That’s only 9 years away! You may think that I’m being an alarmist for no reason. Think about it though, it’s not too far off of an idea. Machines are an integral part of running our lives. We can’t go anywhere without our phones. We live most of our lives online. But the biggest worry out there is one little device. It’s cylindrical in shape, grey, and has a blue ring of light on the top. Oh sure it LOOKS harmless enough. But as of January 2019, there were over 100 million of these devices sold. That’s right, it’s the Amazon Alexa. At this point we are already letting Alexa run our houses. How long will it be until she’s running everything? What happens when “The Terminator” switches from just a movie into being true foreshadowing? What will happen when we replace Skynet with Alexa? That’s what I asked twitter this week with the hashtag #WhenAlexaFinallyTakesOver. So check out the top list below and don’t forget to join me every Tuesday at 11 am EDT for the next exciting episode of “Hashtag, You’re It”. Ask Alexa to set a reminder for you!
