#DisturbingNamesForAClown via Hashtag, You’re It!: @BrandNewMcMann The Top Picks

Now in past intros I have delved into the history of clowns. Starting from their early days in commedia dell’arte to their rise in popularity in the 1800’s to their fast decline in popularity in the late 1900’s. John Wayne Gacy, Pennywise, the clown doll from “Poltergeist” all played their parts in the downfall of these circus performers. This even lead to the 2016 craze of people dressing up in creepy clown costumes and wandering around at night scaring people. This craze wasn’t even limited to one area of the country or even just this country! There were reports of clown sightings in almost every single state in the U.S. and 18 other countries all over the world. See, even just that last sentence was creepy because I had to type the phrase “Clown Sightings”. Clowns have gone from friendly, laughable fools to dark nightmares who are after your very soul. Or at least a few pints of your blood. So even the most lovable clowns of days gone by have a sinister name if you really think about it. Red Skeleton, T.J. Tatters, Angus Oblong, Fumagalli, Blinko, Grock, Mr. Noodles, and Pogo are in themselves innocent until you just think of them in a dark and scary way. By the way, that last clown name: Pogo, was the name that John Wayne Gacy named his clown character. In today’s culture clowns are no longer looked upon with glee and delight. They are now seen as almost demons who have taken on a guise of a beloved children’s character. So all of that to say, clowns are disturbing. So why not run with it? Why not make clowns as disturbing as we think they are. Let’s Start with their names. That’s why this week’s “Hashtag, You’re It” was #DisturbingNamesForAClown.
