In 1947 Carl Barks introduced the world to Glasgow born, venture capitalist, treasure hunting, spat wearing (but no shoes)……Scrooge McDuck. The maternal uncle to Donald Duck, Scrooge is a self made man we left Scotland early in life to travel the world as a cabin boy. Eventually ending up in the Klondike, he discovered a gold nugget that was the size of goose’s egg. By the age of 25 he had made his first $1,000,000. After his many travels he ended up in the town of Duckburg where he built his infamous Money Bin. When Donald Duck enlists into the Navy Scrooge is tasked to look after his grand-nephews Huey, Dewey, and Louie. Just like there is a Marvel Universe, and a DC Universe, Scrooge lives in what is known as the Duck Universe (seriously). In this universe Scrooge is the “Richest Duck In The World”. While his exact net worth is unknown Scrooge’s accountant once said that his Money Bin alone held 607 tillion 386 zillion 947 trillion 522 billion dollars and 36 cents. And in one episode of “Ducktales” he tells Dewey that his Money Bin is just pocket change. So it’s safe to say that Scrooge is well off. But what if one day he wakes up, does some light stretching, decides to go for a morning swim in his Money Bin, but when he dives in there isn’t a single gold coin to catch him? No, the Beagle Boys didn’t steal it. He’s just broke! So how did it happen? How did the world’s richest duck lose it all? That’s what I asked Twitter this week with the hashtag #HowScroogeMcDuckWentBankrupt. So check out the top list below and don’t forget to join me every Tuesday at 11 am EDT for the next exciting episode of “Hashtag, You’re It”
