So yesterday was the internationally celebrated holiday 4/20. I’m sure we all know what that holiday is. *waits 10 seconds*……Ok, Ok, fine. Mom, let me explain. 4/20 is a holiday celebrating the use of cannabis. The origin of the name 4/20 came from a group of 5 friends back in 1971 that would meet every day after school at 4:20 to smoke pot. Their slang for that daily meeting became 4/20. One of those friends went on to become a roadie for “The Grateful Dead”. There the slang really took hold and the band’s popularity helped it spread across the counterculture. Now a days, with many states legalizing marijuana, it seems that the holiday of 4/20 is doing it’s job. The celebration began not just as a way to get high, but as a political movement to help decriminalize marijuana and help those unproportionatley affected by the war on drugs. The war against marijuana famously started with newspaper magnet William Randolph Hearst. Hemp was on it’s way to become a much cheaper form of paper and it was going to start messing with his bottom line. So Hearst started a VERY successful smear campaign against “The Horrors Of Marijuana”. If you ever want to know what they truly thought marijuana was doing to people watch the 1936 propaganda movie “Reefer Madness”. It’s hilarious. Marijuana does none of the terrible things that that movie shows. What it really does is just make you feel good, not want to move, unless it’s to get Doritos. Even physicians know the positive effects of marijuana. It helps with anxiety, helps alleviate pain, and helps cancer patients regain their appetite. So 4/20 has become a holiday that isn’t just for the counterculture but with the legalization across the country a holiday that you might see soon advertised at your local Target. So to help celebrate this holiday I wanted to take the day and make it even more fun. That’s why this week’s “Hashtag, You’re It” was #SmokeUpAMovie. Of course there have been many “Pot Movies” before like “Cheeck & Chong’s: Up In Smoke”, “Harold a& Kumar Go To White Castle”, “How High”, “Pineapple Express”, and “Smiley Face”.
